My Training Request
with AFSP/TSA

The goal of this tutorial is to help you, step by step, to register your training with the US authorities, before you start the practical training.

Be sure you have your passport, your licenses, and (if available) your FAA PPL or CPL, before starting this process.

Step 1 : Create your "Student account"

Go to this URL : https://fts.tsa.dhs.gov

Create a "new student account" (this requires an email address where the password will be sent) by selecting Register Options then Candidate Portal.

If you already created an account in the past, do not create a new one. Retrieve your login and password with the online tool available on the website.
If you don't have access to your old email address to retrieve your login info, contact us !

You will have to create your profile by following 6 steps (passeport information, access protection, etc.).
You should create your account on the basis of an email address that you know you will be able to access in the future.

Step 2 : Your training request

Log into your "Candidate Portal".
Keep preciously your login information, as you may need them again in the future. This will be your link with TSA for your aviation training activities.

Once you are logged, go to :

"Initiate a Request for a Flight Training Event"

Then select :
"Request a Category 1, 2 or 3 Training Event"

This will make you scroll down in the form, then check Category 3, and you will have three options :

Choose :

  • Initial Pilot Certification : for PPL or CPL training (single engine)

  • Instrument Rating : For instrument rating training

  • Multiengine : For a multiengine training (PPL or CPL)

  • Then you will select your training Provider, here Orbifly in the New York State, and you will also provide :

  • The aircraft type (DA42, C182 or SR22...)

  • A course ID (INSTRUMENT or MULTIENGINE or CPL for example, this field is not really complicated)

  • The expected training duration (allow some weeks for the starting date, and provide a duration long enough for any unexpected delays, but less than a year)

  • Then you sign by writing down the date (the american way...) and by clicking I agree :

Step 3 : Provider Validation then payment

Orbifly will receive your request and validate it quickly.
Once it's done, you will receive an email to let you know you need to log into the Flightschoolcandidates website again and pay a 130 dollars fee online.

This payment will allow your file to be reviewed by AFSP/TSA. From there... be patient !

    Step 4 : Fingerprints

Important : If you already did this step in a previous request, you will not need to do it again.

Wait for the email that will allow you to have your fingerprints collected.

Once you have received this email, it will give you the steps to be followed for that process. There are several Fingerprints collector who can provide this service in Europe as well as in the US.

This step will require an online fee to TSA then a physical appointment with a Fingerprints collector. Outside the US, you will generally be charged.

You will find here the list of all approved fingerprints collector : https://www.orbifly.com/fingerprints

Shortly after this step (usually one week), you should receive the approval to start your training !
